Most wouldn’t even want to considering what it takes to make it. Look at the average, as there are very, very few pilots making anywhere near $650k. Point being: don’t dwell on that as anything you’ll ever get. If you’re single, have no personal commitments, and are in a time when the category you are in is very short staffed, then sure. It also requires a tremendous amount of flexibility in your personal life at best, and having no personal life at worst. This isn’t always - or even usually - available. Pilots making this kind of money are taking advantage of temporary situations and picking up a lot of flying at extra pay. But don’t count on it, and this is missing a lot of context. I bring this up because that extra $50k isn’t guaranteed (profit sharing) or anything you can use right now (401k.) But it is something that salary comparison sites would include. ![]() Take out the retirement and profit sharing, and I’d say more like $200-$300k of gross pay. I’d say the majority of captains make somewhere in that range. $250-$350k/year is reasonable, if you count 401k contributions and profit sharing.
